The Power of Competency Assessment: Unlocking Potential
In Sri Lanka, competency evaluation has become a vital instrument for efficient workplace administration. This method focuses on determining, improving, and assessing the competencies that are necessary for an organisation to succeed.
Competency-based human resource management (CBHRM) is being
adopted by Sri Lankan organisations more frequently in an effort to improve
performance and obtain a competitive edge in the global economy.
According to the AIHR “HR Academy playbook,” there are three strategic components in HR policy.

That is all HR professionals
require, alongside specialist competencies specific to individual roles.
There are three main stages in the CBHRM process.
- Competency identification: determining essential skills and knowledge for specific roles through job analysis.
- Competency modeling: developing frameworks that define required competencies for each position.
- Competency assessment: evaluating employee performance against defined competencies using tools like self-assessment and 360-degree feedback.
Competency Mapping in Sri Lanka
The importance of competency mapping for organisational success has been acknowledged by Sri Lanka. In 2017 The TV Rao Learning Institute (TVRLS) of India and the Institute of Personnel Management (IPM) of Sri Lanka collaborated to offer a competency mapping certification program in Sri Lanka. The target audience of this program is HR professionals, line managers, and recruiting specialists with at least five years of human resource management experience (Ada Derana Biz, 2017).
Benefits of Competency
Assessment
There are significant improvements have been observed by organisations that have used competency-based approaches. According to the article “Competencies Hold the Key to better hiring” published by Michael L. (2015), these benefits can be witnessed.
- Reduced employee turnover
- Enhanced job performance
- Improved communication
- Better succession planning
Conclusion
This is a useful tool for Sri Lankan businesses looking to maximise their human resources in competency assessment. Businesses can create more focused training programs and make better hiring decisions. Because of this, it ultimately improves organizational performance. As Sri Lanka tries to enter and integrate into the global economy competency-based HRM practices are an added advantage to building a competitive and high performance organisation.
