Engaging Your Workforce: The Key to Organizational Success
Employee engagement is the emotional commitment when employees feel to can give their best effort. It is like a plant that needs water to grow, just as same an organisation needs engaged employees to thrive. When employees are fully engaged, companies can achieve higher productivity, better retention, and stronger financial outcomes.
What is Employee Engagement
According to Armstrong M. (2009), employee engagement takes place when people at work are interested in and positive, even excited about their jobs and are prepared to go the extra mile to get them done to the best of their ability.
According to Macey, W. and Schneider, B. (2008) there is a framework that helps to HR professionals understand engagement.
Trait Engagement - Personal dispositions like positive
affectivity and reliability that influence individuals toward engagement.
State Engagement - Psychological feelings of energy,
absorption, and enthusiasm.
Behavioral Engagement - Observable actions like flexible
effort and organizational citizenship behaviours.

According to Armstrong M. (2009), engagement with a company
will be successful when employees have:
- Meaningful work that utilizes their skills - Design jobs with variety, challenge, and autonomy.
- Transformational leadership - Leaders who inspire trust drive higher engagement.
- Opportunities for personal development- Clear growth paths signal investment in employees' futures.
- Regular recognition and feedback.
- Opportunities to contribute.
- Career development.
- Flexible arrangements to support in respect for personal needs.

According to a research summary of the “State of the Global Workplace” conducted by Gallup 2024 there is an interesting explanation for the relationship between engagement and overall life experiences.
Under negative experience actively disengaged and unemployed respondents are the most likely to stress, anger, worry, sadness and loneliness. As employees become more engaged, the percentage of negative experiences drops.
On the positive side, engaged employees are more likely to be thriving in their overall lives and 88% of engaged employees say they experienced a lot of enjoyment yesterday

According to the DTC engagement research 2022 an
organisation has a successful employee engagement program when it’s key drivers
connect emotionally with it’s workforce.
Why is Employee Engagement Crucial
- Truly engaged employees will deliver a significant competitive advantage for the company.
- Increased productivity.
- Higher retention.
- Enhanced customer satisfaction.
- Greater innovation.
- Improved financial performance.
Conclusion
Employee engagement is a critical strategic element in the
modern HRM for the benefit of organisational success. In Sri Lankan companies
mostly facing unique cultural and economic challengers. Sri Lanka,
organisations must provide essential resources to ensure that employees work
effectively. Additionally, it recommends that organisations have two-way
conversations with employees at the ground level and look beyond survey data. Employee
engagement is a complex idea impacted by a wide range of interdependent
circumstances. HR must change with the workplace, whether in New York or
Colombo, in order to maximise human potential and promote success. As
workplaces evolve, HR must adapt whether in Colombo or New York to unlock human
potential and drive success.
